So I needed to create a PDF document…

but my company is rather selective in who gets to intall Adobe Acrobat. I ran across a list on DIGG that has some good replacements…FOR FREE!

The first two are web-based converters which are awesome for kiosk or public terminal environments. I’ve used it to convert MS Office docs on my web-enabled pda (Dell Axim x50v) and email it from the site directly to my contact.
1. ExpressPDF – This is a webpage that converts a Word, Excel, or webpage into a PDF and emails it to you. It allows users to specify print quality options for “screen optimized, eBook optimized, or print optimized”

2. Document Converter eXPress –  Another webpage converter but with several output options (PDF, BMP, JPEG, PostScript, TIFF, EPS, PCX, PNG, GIF) and an option for PDF encryption and watermark support. This site does have a 1MB size limit, but will convert in browser or email the converted document to you.

Adobe’s web-based converter service sells for $9.99/ mo. or $99.99/yr for the same service!
The other options are all installed programs

3. Cute PDF Writer –  “CutePDF Writer installs itself as a “printer subsystem”. This enables virtually any Windows applications (must be able to print) to create professional quality PDF documents – with just a push of a button!”  – Requires PS2PDF converter such as Ghostscript (recommended).

4. PDFCreator –  ” PDFCreator easily creates PDFs from any Windows program. Use it like a printer in Word, StarCalc or any other Windows application.” This is a SourceForge project.

Every mac comes built-in with the ability to print from any application to PDF. Oops…sorry. I am trying not to push you over the edge. 🙂
